Digital Painting for Concept Artists and Illustrators

Chris Oatley's 'Animal Farm' Digital Painting for ImagineFX MagazineMost digital painting tutorials are all about the "digital" and not at all about the "painting."

They tell you which button to click and demonstrate cool, digital tricks but they don't help you create believable worlds and characters.

"Digital" is just a synonym for "convenience."

The power is in the painting.

Concept artists and illustrators want to create worlds and characters, tell stories with pictures, find meaning in ideas, and make emotional connections with an audience.

To be fair, this page could really benefit from a little more "step-by-step."

...so I'm working on that.

But for now, if you're looking for something deeper, more personal and challenging, then you've come to the right place...

Tinker Bell & The Great Fairy Rescue: ‘Real World’ Props Visual Development

By Chris Oatley

I had to paint a lot of real-world, turn of the century props for Tinker Bell And The Great Fairy Rescue and these are some of my favorites.

Below are the designs for the biggest glue bottle in the world. That is because this glue bottle was made real and huge and was installed at Tink’s house in Disneyland along with a couple of other things I worked on.  I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ll be sure to post pics here when I do.  Thanks for rocking my world, Imagineers!

Tinker Bell & The Great Fairy Rescue: ‘Fairy Transportation’ Prop Visual Development

By Chris Oatley

In our most recent installment of the Disney Fairies series, the Fairies of Pixie Hollow travel to the mainland (rural England) and set up a Fairy Camp.

The seasonal ritual comes with the logistical challenge of transporting large stores of Pixie Dust (which fuels fairy flight) as well as Tinker Bell’s mount, a mouse named Cheese. Although I enjoyed working on a lot of period, man-made objects, I love the magical stuff the most and these props definitely have the magic.

Tinker Bell & The Great Fairy Rescue: Set Visual Development

By Chris Oatley

To a human, it is a revolutionary convenience, but to a fairy it is a hostile environment.

Here are some of the set designs that I painted for the antique car that is featured prominently in the girl-power finale of Tinker Bell and The Great Fairy Rescue which is now available on DVD & Blu Ray.

It was a very compelling assignment. I worked with expert draftsman/ model builder/ sailor Ron Roesch to create an amalgam of several turn of the century vehicles. (Art Direction by Fred Warter)

Throughout this assignment I learned a lot about cars and the general history of the automobile. Ron knows how things work and thus this car is so precisely designed it would almost run if anyone went to the trouble of actually building it.

While Ron and I worked together, he even explained to me how one concocts moonshine. Moonshine is, in fact, NOT featured prominently in the finale of Tinker Bell and The Great Fairy Rescue.

It took weeks to design. My brains melted as we worked out all of the moving parts. I reconciled the design from every angle: top, left, right, front & bottom views (plus the firewall & steering mechanism which are shown above).

(Remember my disoriented tweets about my walk through the empty halls of the studio and my involuntary burst into song? “You can fly, you can fly…” Yeah. …that was then.)

I also did the Vis Dev painting for the undercarriage of the car, which is a set that is featured near the beginning of the film (not shown here).

I will continue to post my work from the movie in the coming weeks.

Needless to say, I’m very proud of the work we did on this film. I think the movie is our strongest one yet. …and I happen to know that the best is still yet to come.

Exciting times at DTS, my friends…

Alien Janitor: Process Video (part 2) :: ArtCast #23

By Chris Oatley

Click Here to watch Part One of this series.

This video was recorded in August of 2009.

The ‘News’ announcements are outdated. The quality of the art, the video and the audio aren’t as strong as my more recent but I believe that the content is still worthwhile.

In the second half of this video, I respond to a question that was sent in by a viewer concerning the kind of brush that I used in the first half.

I talk a little bit about the differences between digital painting and traditional painting and how I like to embrace the “digital” part of digital painting while still maintaining the essence of what I love about traditional media like oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor.

Lastly, I provide a couple of easy steps to help you re-create the brush that I use for most of this episode and I explain the motivation behind the way I chose to “finish” this piece.

I recently had the tremendous honor of joining my friends Kevin Cross and Joshua Kemble as a guest on their awesome podcast Big Illustration Party Time.

It is an amazing resource for anyone interested in freelance illustration.

The topic that we discussed was character design so each of us did a ‘homework assignment’ before the episode where we had to design a “hero.”

I came up with an alien janitor in cut-offs.

I did a screen capture of the entire painting and I have split that video into two parts.  The first part, this episode, will be accompanied by a series of audio clips from my guest appearance on Big Illustration Party Time.

In Part Two, I will go into further detail via voiceover about the process of creating and finishing this painting.
