Concept Art: How To Break In and Stay In

Concept Art for Chris Oatley's personal project based on 'The Wizard Of Oz' Legendary Disney artist Armand Serrano told me: "They hire you for your art, but they keep you because of your ideas."

There are a million concept art portfolios out there...

...and very few compelling concepts.

A professional concept artist designs the future. They don't simply copy current trends.

They envision environments, props, characters, costumes, color palettes and compositions that audiences have never seen before.

A professional concept artist is collaborative and infinitely curious.

A professional concept artist has an inexhaustible visual library.

A professional concept artist is a master of the fundamentals and knows numerous efficient, focused techniques.

Here's a collection of my best interviews and articles to help you stay focused on what really matters to concept artists who are serious about breaking-in, staying-in or getting a better gig...

Interview With ‘Playfish’ Designer Steve Galgas :: ArtCast #43

By Chris Oatley

IN THIS EPISODE ::

Steve Galgas is a long-time friend who, like me, is interested in almost everything.  He is a great concept artist and illustrator.  His currently-on-hiatus webcomic “Mr. Grant” is gorgeous.

He has worked for Pixar, Liquid! and now he works for a great young social games company known as Playfish.

Steve and I discuss his career (including some of the goings-on behind the scenes at Pixar), sustainability in web content like webcomics and animated webseries and we engage in some fresh discussion the relationship between traditional hand-drawn and CG animation.

Alien Janitor: Process Video (part 2) :: ArtCast #23

By Chris Oatley

Click Here to watch Part One of this series.

This video was recorded in August of 2009.

The ‘News’ announcements are outdated. The quality of the art, the video and the audio aren’t as strong as my more recent but I believe that the content is still worthwhile.

In This Video ::

In the second half of this video, I respond to a question that was sent in by a viewer concerning the kind of brush that I used in the first half.

I talk a little bit about the differences between digital painting and traditional painting and how I like to embrace the “digital” part of digital painting while still maintaining the essence of what I love about traditional media like oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor.

Lastly, I provide a couple of easy steps to help you re-create the brush that I use for most of this episode and I explain the motivation behind the way I chose to “finish” this piece.
