ArtCast #8 :: Digital Painting Tutorial :: Hulk Vs. Wolverine (part 4)

February 22, 2009

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

IN THIS EPISODE::

In this episode, I share a digital painting technique that involves the subtraction of color from a series of transparent multiply layers combined with a more direct approach to painting in Photoshop CS3.

I talk about atmospheric perspective and how to apply that principle to painting the figure.  I also further explore the concept of providing a fresh perspective on of iconic characters.

I am finally back to my regular schedule of posting a new blog or podcast every Monday.

Skeletor

February 15, 2009

Recently, I discovered that old episodes of He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe can be viewed for free on hulu.com. While watching the old episodes, I got really inspired.

I started thinking about Skeletor. I mean, the guy has a floating skull instead of a head, an outfit festooned with bones, a giant alien-ram’s-head-staff and a grim-reaper-style hood and yet he is a complete buffoon. He is not the least bit scary. He is a walking contradiction.  A joke.  Judging from his design, he SHOULD be utterly terrifying.  But then he opens his stupid mouth.

Anyway, I still love him. And I always will. So I decided to attempt to paint a genuinely scary version of Skeletor.  And here it is. I think I succeeded.  But I’m interested in your opinions.

‘Legends Of Zork’ Art

February 8, 2009

Hello my friends! I hope you are feeling inspired this Monday morning.

I have two new podcasts in the works (another Hulk Vs. Wolverine video episode and an audio interview with the very awesome Grant Gould) but I still have some work to do on both of those, so today I decided to share with you some art.

I recently did some visual development for an online video game. The game is another installment in the classic ‘Zork’ franchise called Legends Of Zork. The style is similar to that of the old point-and-click Monkey Island games from LucasArts.

I have permission to post a couple of ‘teaser’ images. The line art is by Greg Brown and the whole project was directed by the remarkable Jim Zubkavich at UDON Entertainment. Jim also designed all of the characters in the game. You can learn more about the game here.

‘The Dreamer’ #4 In Stores NOW!

February 7, 2009

Friends, I just went to pick up my copy of The Dreamer Issue #4 at my local comic shop in Santa Monica.  For those of you that don’t know, I painted the cover of this issue in a collaboration with one of my dearest friends, artist Lora Innes.  Despite the grumpiness of the staff, it was a wonderful moment, seeing my work on a real comic book cover in a real comic store for the very first time!

Head out now to pick up your own copy and be sure to check out TheDreamerComic.com where you can read every issue of The Dreamer online for free!

Also, you can listen to an awesome interview with Lora Innes HERE on Chris Oatley’s ArtCast!
